This may come as no surprise to anyone who knows our family, but we tend to spend A LOT of our time whilst in Florida at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

As cliché as it sounds, I really do get the feeling of coming ‘home’ when I walk into Hogsmeade, the train conductor from the Hogwarts Express welcomes me and the snow lined buildings entice me in, then I round that corner and see Hogwarts and it’s Niagara Falls baby!

However, there is one sign that I am drawn to the most every time, the Butterbeer - it calls to me!!

For years Harry Potter fans have wished they could taste the sweet beverage that is so often spoken about with such love in the books. And now, thanks to Universal Studios, we can!

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (which is commonly referred to as WWOHP) actually sells six different types of Butterbeer. Yes, you read that right, SIX gorgeous variations of the flavour that JK Rowling described as “a little bit like less-sickly butterscotch”.

Read on to find out more…

Cold Butterbeer

The original Butterbeer that was first available in the parks, this drink is like a fizzy cream soda with a really lovely frothy top that tastes a bit like shortbread, but sweeter and creamy! It is a bit like a ‘float’ style refreshment, and honestly, on a red hot day in the Florida heat, it really hits the spot!!

A lot of people find it ‘too sickly sweet’ but for me, it is the perfect amount of sweet – VERY! Haha.

Plus, it is impossible to drink it without giving yourself a ‘tashe, and every single time it happens I am transported back to the day a Butterbeer moustache changed Phil’s marriage proposal to me in the Three Broomsticks!

Madam Rosmerta would have been proud!

You can either get your Butterbeer served in a plastic disposable cup or you can pay a little extra and get it in a souvenir tankard, which can then be used for all your many, many (if you are me then these are plentiful!) trips back for more of the wonder stuff!

Cold Butterbeer is priced at $6.99 and is available at many locations throughout Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, including the pubs/restaurants as well as the street carts.

Frozen Butterbeer

As above, but like a slushie version. This type of Butterbeer comes with a straw due to it’s icy texture, and the straw also has a little scoop ending so you don’t have to miss a single drop!

The frozen version isn’t quite as sweet as the original type, and I think this makes it enjoyable to more people, but personally of the two I prefer the cold.

WARNING: Don’t gulp it down super fast, regardless of how hot you are and how much you think it is cooling you down, a Butterbeer headache is NOT fun! This is coming from the voice of experience - I am wincing just remembering the brain freeze. I believe Nargles are to blame...

Unfortunately, none of the Butterbeers in the WWOHP are served in bottles like they are in the books, so we are unable to collect the corks and make ourslelves a necklace like Luna Lovegood, to keep away the Nargles.

Frozen Butterbeer is also priced at $6.99 and available at many locations throughout Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, including the pubs/restaurants as well as the street carts.

Hot Butterbeer

Now, I will be honest with you that I didn’t really hold out much hope for hot Butterbeer when I heard about it, as I am a tea lover but will only have it with breakfast in Orlando, as the weather is too hot for me to enjoy a hot drink properly.
That being said, I ordered a hot Butterbeer in the Three Broomsticks with my breakfast instead of tea one winter when we visited, and I am very happy to report that it is probably the nicest hot drink I have EVER had!
Move over Twinings, there’s a new winner in town!

It has the same sweet taste as the cold Butterbeer, but obviously it’s warm, and it just makes my mouth and tummy dance with happiness! Plus, hot is actually the way that JK described Butterbeer in the books, so it really is how it should be drank, if we are being authentic :)

I do only drink this with breakfast, and unfortunately it is a seasonal drink, so unless you go over in the winter months you won’t be able to try it, but if you are visiting throughout the ‘colder’ months, I urge you to try it, you can thank me later! I think only a bear hug from Hagrid could come close.

Hot Butterbeer is also priced at $6.99 and available at many locations throughout Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, including the pubs/restaurants as well as the street carts. But as previously mentioned, this is a seasonal drink and available throughout winter.

Butterbeer Ice cream

What’s not to love?! Indulgently creamy ice cream mixed with the caramelly butterscotch taste of Butterbeer, sounds like heaven. And it is!

The ice cream doesn’t have quite a strong a taste of the Butterbeer flavour as the beverages do, but it is a gorgeously tasty treat! It is a bit more caramel tasting, with a hint of butterscotch, rather than the other way round, which is what the drinks are.

It really hits the spot while enjoying WWOHP in the heat.

You can get Butterbeer Ice Cream in quite a few places in both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, but I knew there was only one place I wanted to get it from – Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlor. If it’s good enough for Harry on his first visit then it is good enough for me on all of mine haha!

I decided to get in it a souvenir sundae glass (It’s plastic) as you may have guessed, if there is a collectable to, well, collect, I am all over that like Mundungus Fletcher in a house burglary. But you don’t have to, you can get it in a cardboard tub or an edible cone.

You can get the Butterbeer flavoured ice cream in multiple locations throughout WWOHP in both parks, and they are priced at $5.49 in a tub, $6.49 in a cone, $9.99 in a souvenir glass.

Butterbeer Fudge

Before I begin to tell you about Butterbeer fudge, let me tell you that fudge is one of my favourite treats in the whole non-wizarding world!  It was even my craving when I was pregnant with Niall!

So it may come as a disappointing surprise, which it did to me, that Butterbeer fudge is actually not as special as I had hoped.

I am actually hoping that I just had a particularly flavourless batch. Because I couldn’t really taste Butterbeer at all. It was really yummy, don’t get me wrong – it was a sweet tasting biscuity flavour rather plain to be honest. Which as a fudge is very tasty, but as a Butterbeer fudge, just didn’t really live up to the hype.

However, I WILL try it again, and I WILL report back whether or not maybe my tastebuds were just having the day off that day! Which I am hoping is the case, if only because I really don't want my favourite fudge in the Wizarding World to be Cornelius!!

You can get Butterbeer Fudge in Honeydukes and Sugarplum’s Sweet Shop and it is priced at $3.95.

Butterbeer Potted Cream

Apparently this variety, which comes in a cute little Mason Jar, tastes like a creamy custard type of Butterbeer. It has been described as ‘Incredibly sweet’ and ‘a burst of sugar’ by a few reviews we have read, but then I am sure that all Butterbeer reviews, no matter that variety, will say the same! They are just that!

And I say ‘apparently’ because unfortunately, this is the only type of Butterbeer that I am yet to try!

Just gives us a reason to go back for another WWOHP visit, as if we needed an excuse!

Butterbeer Potted Cream is available in The Three Broomsticks and The Leaky Cauldron at $5.29

Whichever way you want your wizarding treat, just remember all the cool people (and we ARE cool, don’t let anyone tell you any different!) make sure to whip out your wand and use your spell knowledge to it’s full potential… Accio Butterbeer!
